Is it possible that a year has passed since we all first met. I for one have been drinking in the beauty of the beginning of summer. Usually, summer for me is a time to kick back… enjoy the slower pace at both work and home. But this summer seems unusually calm. No lectures to prepare, no phone calls to practicum kids, no stress about the details that seemed endless at this time last year. And yet, in the quiet and calm, I miss the intensity. I miss the challenge of a new opportunity. And so, I will not be idle long. I will add something new, another mountain to climb, another journey on which to embark. Are you too ready for the next leg of the journey?

I think about each of you and wonder how you have grown. How I would love to see each of you treating now. Have you journeyed to the place that you want to be as a therapist? It is time now to look again at those notes and pictures in Lois’ book. You will be amazed at how much flew over your head the first time around! The more you know, the less you know.

And so, as I head to the beach this weekend, I will think how I missed the waves of the ocean last summer. But I will remember the great things that we did together instead. I will be grateful for meeting and sharing with 20 dedicated therapists.

Hi Everyone,

Can you believe that it is actually one year since we stared our journey together!! This time last year we were all packing, traveling and sharpening our pencils!! Do you remember the emotions that you experienced that day?

I know I was nervous! I wondered; who were these 20 people that I would be spending 8 weeks with? What do their videos look like? Who are the kids for the practicums? Will I wake up on time? Will I get to class on time? So many questions in my mind!!

Finally June 19 arrived and I got up on time, made it to class on time…. Only to discover that we were in a small room rather than the large room I expected. Oh well, that would be fine for the first week… no problem!! The sisters are always kind and helpful.

….. Where is everyone???? We soon discovered that several of you were wandering around at the hospital. Oh well, we will wait. I remember the first time I tried to find the Provincialate. Yikes, where is it???? I drove all over town.

Ahhhhh but then everyone was found and the class began…. Finally the day had come!!

And what an experience it turned out to be!!!!! Colleen and I could not believe how friendly, kind, nice, enthusiastic, and fantastic each of you were as individuals and as a group. It quickly became evident to us that you were “unique” in a wonderful way!!! And we were very fortunate and blessed to be working with you. Thank you each for being you.

Isn’t it amazing how the children in practicums and the children you treated at home changed. First they changed in a bad way… Oh no, you suddenly could see the problems they had. Where did those problems come from? They weren’t there yesterday. Then they changed in wonderful ways…they really got better!!! And so did your insights and handling skills. Isn’t it an astonishing experience? You can Dance!!!!! The children you work with are now “Dancing with Stars”.

The album you gave me sits on my coffee table for everyone to look at and for me to peruse when I feel lonely. Thank you for the memories!!!!

My hopes and prayers are that you continue to love what you do, continue to love learning and continue to dance with enthusiasm, grace and skill.

I miss each of you and I wish that we had a short refresher course coming up so we could all enjoy being together again. (I guess we have a mini refresher at Hospital for Special Surgery. You know….it is that hospital for “special” people. Those of us who come to the course will soon be part of the “special” group.) And, of course we have a reunion coming up July 28. I hope you each will come!!!

Unlock a Door--Christine's NDT Journey as an SLP

My journey into NDT as an SLP began when a colleague (an NDT trained OT) recommended that I apply for the 8-week course. She told me that it would be great for me and that I would love it. So I applied and was accepted.
Little did I know I was embarking on the most difficult journey of my professional career. When I graduated from college and started working as an SLP, I knew that I wanted to work with children.
After I interviewed at Matheny, a special school for children and adults with developmental disabilities, I knew that was where I wanted to work. I have always loved the challenge of finding a way to ‘unlock a door” and help a child find a way to communicate, or dramatically improve oral feeding skills, and the kids at Matheny are the biggest challenge I know.

The longer I worked at Matheny, the more I realized there were pieces missing in how I needed to work with a child with cerebral palsy. I would see challenges my students were having, and I knew where I wanted to go, but I had no idea how to get there, and no matter where I looked for direction, I couldn’t find any.

When I started the NDT course, I had no idea how much I didn’t know about my field, and how much I should know about it. Honestly, I sat in class the first few days wanting to cry because I was so completely lost, but as the first week progressed, I started putting a few pieces together, and I started thinking, ‘why don’t they teach us this in speech school?’ The theories behind NDT really made me stop and think about the whole body and how everything works together.

As the 8 weeks progressed I started to see and understand that communicating and feeding are more than the mouth and language centers of the brain, they are the result of all parts of the complex machine we call our body working efficiently and effectively together. I started to realize that as an SLP, especially one who works with kids with disabilities, I should know why posture and movement are important to communication and feeding, and that changing ineffective postures and movement is critical to changing poor feeding or communication skills. NDT taught me to look beyond the traditional role of the SLP, and realize that to truly change communication and feeding in kids with disabilities, I have to be not just an SLP, but a little bit of a physical therapist and little bit of an occupational therapist. OT and PT are more closely related than speech therapy is to either.

As a result, I believe that the NDT journey for an SLP is longer and harder then for an OT or PT. Where we have to learn to be an OT and a PT, they don’t necessarily need to learn to be an SLP. Learning to think outside of the traditional SLP role was one of the greatest challenges I faced during my course, and one that I continue to face as I continue to integrate NDT into myself. My clinical skills have changed drastically since I began the NDT course.

My fellow speech pathologists at Matheny have noticed the changes in my skills more than I have! One speech pathologist told me that the kids looked so much better after I had been working with them. To have one of my colleagues notice a positive change reinforces that I am doing it right, and it encourages me to keep learning and integrating NDT. The more comfortable I become with NDT, the more I am able to share it with my co-workers, and the more I encourage them to consider taking an NDT course. Taking the 8-week NDT course was one of the best things I could have done for myself as an SLP.

Emily Hull's NDT Journey as a Speech Therapist

When I first began working with infants and toddlers as a new therapist, I was unaware of what my role was as a speech-language pathologist. I was often asked the question of “What do you do with infants, they don’t talk?” I honestly didn’t know. I was soon introduced to NDT and attended a couple introduction classes. However, I still didn’t know my role as a speech-language pathologist working with infants and toddlers. A couple years later I completed my Eight-week NDT course, and finally I was developing a clearsense of the importance of a speech-language pathologist working with infants and toddlers. Infants may not “talk”, but they eat and they use the same muscles to talk that they do to eat. The relationship between motor development and the mouthintrigued me and continues to intrigue me. The eight-week course deepened my desire to learn more, handle more, and seek NDT “speech” mentors. I continually desire more at the next level. My growth as a therapist continues as well as my integration and synthesis of NDT related to speech therapy. My passion as a therapist is definitely in the areas of oral motor/feeding and NDT. I can’t imagine my professional career, or any other speech-languagepathologist’s career, without such a foundation; all speech-language pathologists should have at least a basic understanding of how the mouth correlates with the body, especially for speech and feeding. For me, NDT has defined my role and passion as aspeech-language pathologist. I want to help others find excitement and passion in treating the whole child from an NDT perspective!

The Journey to become a Coordinator Instructor (CI) within the NDTA is a Journey. Here is what I have learned so far…..

Always make an extra copy

Pass out copies individually to students, if someone doesn’t have the handout, tell them to look harder

Have presentation on hard drive, thumb drive, portable drive and burned on CD

Always accept a student with technology expertise

You can never have too many kids signed up for practicum

If a child is perfect for learning in practicum, they probably will get sick

If a referring therapist tells you that the diagnosis is unknown then the child is probably not a good match for the practicum

Nothing is easy except for the easy button

Crying is draining for the students, even worse for the instructors but often challenges you to look deep inside and grow

The students will teach you what you have not taught well

There are blue, yellow, green and orange learners but all are necessary for a beautiful rainbow

Office Max does not carry a binder large enough to hold the NDT handouts

Staplers that work are hard to come by

When feeling stressed, shuffle papers or repack your bags

Repeating a name 3 times gets a students attention: ie:Danielle, Danielle, Danielle

There are never enough mats or enough Clorox wipes

The “Five and Below” is not a place to save money

Make friends with the Mina’s and Karin’s of the world

Ask Lois to be your mentor, she may say yes

When you know what road you are going on, you will definitely get there

Kathleen Ganley received her PhD from the Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California. Her course of study has emphasized motor control/motor learning, and biomechanics. She is currently studying muscle metabolism during walking in persons with central nervous system pathologies.

Kathleen is an assistant professor in the Physical Therapy Department at Northern Arizona University, where she teaches courses in motor development through the lifespan, gait, and neurological rehabilitation. Kathleen has an extensive clinical background in pediatrics and neurological rehabilitation.

COURSE STATEMENT

The certification course in Neuro-Developmental Treatment is one of the longest post-graduate courses currently offered to professionals in the fields of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech pathology. It is an intensive training course comprising both theoretical and practical constructs developed by Dr. and Mrs. Karel Bobath, and conforms to the standards established by the North American NDTA, Inc.

The Eight Week Basic NDT-Bobath Course currently being held in Meadowbrook, PA is taught by a team of professionals. A certified NDTA Coordinator-Instructor, Lois Bly is the primary instructor of this course . She is assisted by other NDTA certified instructors including Therese McDermott, Gail Ritchie and Kathleen Ganley. In addition, NDT certified instructor candidtates Colleen Carey and MaryRose Franjoine, as well as NDT certified therapists Mina Bapat, Emily Hull, and Lisa Glasneer are helping with lab, practicums and special lectures.

Speech therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists from all areas of the country are here including therapists from Canada, Bermuda, California, New York, and Florida. These therapists represent therapist committed to enhancing their skills as therapists as they learn techniques and interventions for children with Cerebral Palsy .

E-mailing photos

Attachment basics
When you send photos in e-mail, the photos go along for the ride as attachments, just like any other file you add to an e-mail.

To attach a photo in Outlook:
- Click New to open a Message window.
Fill in the To and Subject boxes as usual and type any message you wish to accompany the photos.

- Click Insert File (the paperclip icon), locate your file through the Insert File box, click the file's name and then click the Insert button. If you wish to add multiple files from within the same folder, hold down the Ctrl key while clicking multiple files, then click the Insert button.

-Repeat Step 3 for any other files you wish to attach.
Click Send.

Mailbox size limits
Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) set a limit on each customer's mailbox. Many set a per-message limit as well as a total limit on the mailbox's contents. My ISP, for example, limits my mailbox to 10 megabytes and any piece of individual e-mail to 5M. Check with your ISP for the limits on your mailbox, but remember that your recipients' restrictions may differ.
If you send someone an e-mail which exceeds their mailbox restrictions (or yours – the restrictions apply to outgoing e-mail as well) the e-mail will be bounced. That is, you'll get a message from the ISP saying the e-mail was too large to deliver and the recipient won't get a copy. The really frustrating thing about bounced mail is that you waste time uploading the e-mail and it's not until you've completed the process your ISP will inform you it failed to work. So, limit the size of your photo attachments: Use low-resolution photos; use compressed formats; zip photos to reduce their size; or limit yourself to one attachment per e-mail (and make sure that attachment is not too large). Unless I know my recipient can accommodate larger files, I usually limit attachments to under 2M per e-mail.

Formats
You may be able to view images in JPG, TIF, PCD, BMP and other formats, but don't assume your recipients can.
When sending photos, use JPG format unless you have an agreement with the recipient to use a different format. JPG is almost universally supported (even by Mac and Linux users).

Finalize your DVD-R video assignment!!

Why do I have to finalize a DVD-R disc? How can I play back without finalizing? Can I further record on a finalized disc?

Much like "closing" a recordable CD, you must finalize a Video mode DVD-R/RW disc in order to be able to play it on a regular DVD player or computer DVD drive. This writes all the necessary control information to the disc, and adds a main menu. Once a disc is finalized, you cannot edit or add more material to it. The amount of time required for finalization depends on the disc mode and the amount of recorded material. Video mode discs can take up to 20 minutes to finalize, and VR mode discs can take up to 1 hour. Once finalized, you can no longer add motion video to that particular disc. Discs that are not finalized can still be played back when inserted in the DVD-Camcorder.
